Nurturing little minds. |
I'm a 29 year old primary school teacher, teaching a beautiful year one class in West London. I'm giving blogging, about the day to day ups and downs in a year one classroom, a go...bear with me while I get the hang of this! |
We have been learning how to write recounts this week so today the children made models using play dough and then orally gave a recount of how they made their model. They did a fantastic job so tomorrow they’ll be writing the recount using a photo of their model…here’s hoping they remember all their time connectives!

Some old photos from my first few years of teaching in Ireland….
A whole different ball game at that time, displays were mostly about the children’s work and I usually had every available space covered.

We have been learning this song in class over the past few weeks…the children love it, adding actions to it and thinking of new verses to add.
Here are the lyrics:
Over the mountain
I’m driving in a car
I’m driving in a car
I’m driving in a car
I’m driving in a car
Over the mountains
Through the trees
Travel the world
And the seven seas
I’m sailing on a ship
I’m sailing on a ship
I’m sailing on a ship
I’m sailing on a ship
I’m sailing on a ship
I’m driving in a car and
Over the mountains
Through the trees
Travel the world
And the seven seas
I’m travelling on a train
I’m travelling on a train
I’m travelling on a train
I’m travelling on a train
I’m travelling on a train
I’m sailing on a ship
I’m driving in a car and
Over the mountains
Through the trees
Travel the world
And the seven seas
I’m riding on a horse
I’m riding on a horse
I’m riding on a horse
I’m riding on a horse
I’m riding on a horse
I’m travelling on a train
I’m sailing on a ship
I’m driving in a car and
Over the mountains
Through the trees
Travel the world
And the seven seas
Over the mountains
Through the trees
Travel the world
And the seven seas

This is a website that I use sometimes in class for phonics. It would be good to use at home with your child as it has lots of easy to understand games that are both fun and educational. We often play a game called ‘buried treasure’ from this website which the children love. When choosing games, most children in the class are on Phase 5.

Every day, Mr Grinling the lighthouse keeper cleans and polishes his light to make sure it shines brightly at night. At lunchtime he tucks into a delicious and well-deserved lunch, prepared by his wife. But Mr Grinling isn’t the only one who enjoys the tasty food. Will Mrs Grinling think of a way to stop the greedy seagulls from stealing the lighthouse keeper’s lunch? We have read and discussed this book in class. At the below link there are lots of activities, in various subject areas, that you could do at home with your child. http://www.teachinglibrary.co.uk/book/the-lighthouse-keepers-lunch/
